🩷☕️🍰 Mr. Cake: A popular pastry café where Swedish fika meets American style

Sweden’s popular pastry café Mr. Cake is run by the well-known pastry chef Roy Fares and combines American-style baked treats with Sweden’s fika culture. But what kind of cake won over someone like me, who usually doesn’t like desserts that are too sweet?

This is the location my friend and I have been going to a lot lately 👇
☕️ Pastry café: MR CAKE
📍 Address: Regeringsgatan 57, 111 56 Stockholm
🕰️ Opening hours:
Mon-Fri 8:00-19:00
Sat 9:00-19:00
Sun 9:00-18:00
🌐 Official website: https://mrcake.se

🚶🏻‍♀️‍➡️ It’s in a very convenient location near the shopping area, so it’s easy to stop by while walking around the city.
There are also other Mr. Cake locations in Stockholm, including Rådmansgatan and Centralstationen.

Inside, the café is colorful, cute, and full of playfulness.
The striped walls and colorful shelves display not only cakes but other items as well, and the spacious interior makes it feel less stressful even when it’s busy. It’s cute without feeling too childish, and there’s something very Scandinavian about the way it creates a warm, exciting atmosphere that even adults can enjoy.

The display case is lined with bright, colorful cakes, pastries, and sweet breads – so cute!

Actually, the first time a friend brought me here, the colorful American-style look of the cakes made me think they would be way too sweet, so I ended up having only coffee and nothing to eat. (The coffee, by the way, wasn’t American-style at all – it was properly Swedish style and delicious.) Then, after being invited back by another friend and seeing how popular the place was, I started thinking maybe I should try something after all. And that’s how my little dessert exploration began.

So, I thought it would be fun to put together my own completely subjective ranking of the cakes I’ve tried so far – as someone who doesn’t like desserts that are too sweet!

❤️ No.1: Red Velvet Cheesecake

I love this one so much that when I suddenly start craving it, I actually go all the way to the pastry café just to buy it.

💁🏻‍♀️ My thoughts
The sponge is moist and slightly chewy, which reminds me of Japanese brown sugar steamed cake. On top of that, the balance of the rich cream, its gentle tanginess, and the softness of the white chocolate is so perfect that I’ve become completely hooked. I love it so much that I sometimes go out just to get a slice when the craving hits.

No.2: Raspberry & White Chocolate Cheesecake

My friend’s number one favorite, and my number two!

💁🏻‍♀️ My thoughts
I got to try a bite of this too, and just like its elegant appearance suggests, the combination of berry tartness and mellow white chocolate tasted soft, refined, and beautifully balanced.

No.3: Red Velvet Croissant

I ordered this the first time because I love croissants.

💁🏻‍♀️ My thoughts
It looked adorable, and the croissant itself was delicious, but it was filled with cream cheese frosting, which was a little too sweet for me. So whenever I had it, I ended up giving that part to my friend. She was always happy about it, so I think people with a real sweet tooth would probably love this one.

No.4: Key Lime Pie

This was another recommendation from Chatty when I asked for something less sweet.

💁🏻‍♀️ My thoughts
The meringue was a happy surprise to start with- it wasn’t the usual crisp kind, but had a soft, fluffy, almost marshmallow-like texture in the Italian style. The pie underneath had a nice balance of biscuit and tangy lime cream. But halfway through, the meringue started to feel too sweet for me, and I couldn’t finish it. I think I would have liked it more if there had been a little less of that part.

No.5: Salted Caramel Cake

This was also one of Chatty’s recommendations when I asked for something on the less-sweet side.

💁🏻‍♀️ My thoughts
With layers of vanilla sponge, caramel mousse, rich milk chocolate, and flowing caramel sauce, it was very rich and a little too heavy for me.

They also do takeout, which is a nice bonus, and the packaging is super cute. I’d definitely recommend it for a summer picnic too.

I’m grateful that, even though the café is incredibly cute and perfect for both catching up with friends and going on a date, and while the American-style cakes were a little on the sweet side for me, the quality and flavor balance were so good that I still found a cake I love enough to go out of my way to buy again.
